Branch Network

What is a WEA Branch?

A Branch is a group of WEA learners who form to develop their own education programme and learn the things which they feel are important to them. Branch members speak up for their community's educational needs and reach out to those who are most disadvantaged or are outside the traditional education provision.  Classes may include anything from Basic Literacy to Philosophy, from Assertiveness to Welfare Rights.

WEA Branch membership

For the first 25 members a branch can nominate two representatives to attend Regional meetings and the AGM. Also an additional representative may be nominated for every extra 25 members that join.

In addition to being a branch member, a learner can also pay an annual fee to become an individual member of WEA Cymru. This entitles individual members to full voting rights.

Why form a WEA Branch?

WEA Cymru is democratic by nature. Learners are active partners in the construction and organisation of their learning wherever appropriate. Nationally, the Association runs under the guidance of WEA Cymru’s Council and its committee structure. Some of the Council and committee members are elected - by Regional meetings, by branches, or by learners. This ensures that the Association’s governance is influenced by representatives of its democratic structures and of its learners. A new Branch will also benefit from a one-off financial support payment once they are established.
